NJSLA Testing Begins May 12 – Let’s Show Up Well

Beginning May 12, our students will participate in the NJSLA assessments. Testing can quickly feel like another metric that overshadows the vibrant, creative spirits of the young people we serve. But this is not just a test of content knowledge—it’s a moment to remind students that preparation, resilience, and showing up matter.

Let’s help them show up well. Here are a few reminders that can make a big difference:

  • Get a good night’s rest: Sleep is essential. A rested mind is a ready mind.

  • Eat breakfast: Whether at home or school, a full stomach helps with focus and stamina.

  • Arrive at school on time: Testing begins first thing. Late arrivals may need to push testing to the makeup window, and we want to allow our students to test with their peers, not in isolation. Do your best to be here at 7:50 AM.

  • Do your best: Encourage your student to give it their all, not just for the score, but because excellence is a habit we build together.

  • Electronic Devices: Students are not permitted to have cell phones, headphones, AirPods, digital watches, and other electronics on their person when testing commences. Please reinforce this with your child in preparation for successful testing.

Here's the NJSLA testing schedule:
📅 May 12–16: ELA, Math, and Science (Grade-specific units)
📅 May 19–23: Makeups

Families, thank you for being our partners. The goal is not perfection but preparation and presence. Let’s remind our students that this test is not a measure of their worth but an opportunity to demonstrate what they know.

Spirit Week - May 5-9

As we gear up for the NJSLA beginning May 12, our MMS Student Council is leading the charge with Spirit Week—a time to build community, boost morale, and remind our students that they are more than a test score. Each day is an invitation to bring joy, creativity, and school spirit to the building:

🟢 Monday 5/5 – Character Day
🟠 Tuesday 5/6 – Anything but a Bookbag Day
🔴 Wednesday 5/7 – Rhyme Without a Reason Day (for example, one student wears a LIME colored shirt and another student wears a CLOCK --> Lime & Time)
🟡 Thursday 5/8 – Wing Color Day + Pep Rally
(100 - BLACK, 200/500 - BLUE, 300 - GREEN, 400 - RED)
🟣 Friday 5/9 – Rodeo Day

This isn’t just about dressing up—it’s about reminding students that school can be a place of fun, belonging, and pride. Let's celebrate who they are while preparing them to show what they know.

Because when students feel seen, they show up differently.

Student Safety 🛟

Our Priority

As educators, our responsibility to our students doesn't end when the bell rings. We carry the weight of their safety and well-being from dismissal until they walk through the doors of home. It’s a responsibility we don’t take lightly.

In light of recent concerns, we ask for your partnership in reinforcing a clear expectation: students are to walk directly home after school. Effective immediately, students should no longer visit the United Corner Store on Van Sciver Parkway or venture to any other off-campus locations.

This decision is rooted in our commitment to keeping students safe, supported, and on a path that honors their potential.

We’re grateful for your continued support in helping us create the conditions where every student can thrive academically, personally, and socially. Let’s work together to ensure that what happens after the bell reflects the same care and accountability we pour into each school day.

Dress Code Reminders 👔

As temperatures rise, we want to remind everyone that our school dress code remains in full effect and applies to all students.

Please take a moment to review the following expectations:

  • Shorts must reach the knee.

  • Biker shorts are not permitted.

  • Skirts and dresses must be knee-length.

  • Midriffs must remain covered.

We’re asking for your partnership to ensure students come to school dressed appropriately for a learning environment. Students who do not meet dress code expectations will need a family member to bring a change of clothes to school.

Thank you for helping us maintain a focused and respectful school community.
